Overview

Global benefits modernization, simply put, is the practice of updating existing employee benefit provision practices and programs to meet the needs of employees today, and of the workforce needed tomorrow, through a structured, holistic strategy. It’s a human-centric approach based on workforce data and evidenced based practices, which puts the needs of individuals at the center (as opposed to market practice or trends) and allows employers to set a global benefits strategy focusing on what makes talent thrive and perform.

Over the past two decades, the role of employee benefits has been impacted by significant changes in regulations and workforce needs, as well as profound societal shifts. Global benefits must respond to the full spectrum of needs of a modern workforce and rapidly changing world. The modernization of benefits and programs is essential for business sustainability, employee value proposition and to promote health and benefits equity in an increasingly globalized world.

Mercer has been at the forefront of developing benefits modernization practices, working closely with organizations worldwide over the past 10 years to modernize their benefits. During this time, we have observed a growing number of organizations embarking on this journey.

Our 2024 global study found that 54% of global HR leaders from multinational organizations surveyed currently have a benefits modernization strategy in place, and another 31% are making plans to develop one.

This survey is designed to help global leaders of multinational companies who are seeking guidance on where to begin, or how to shape, their benefits modernization efforts. It identifies trends, priorities and challenges experienced by stakeholders at the corporate level when modernizing benefits.
